TEACHING STAFF

Mr Petrie Maree
Year 6 Teacher, Specialist Maths and Computing Teacher
Diploma in Education (Primary) and Higher Diploma in Education (Natural Sciences), South Africa
Briefly describe your career (teaching or otherwise) to date.
After qualifying as a teacher, I taught in London for a year before moving back to South Africa and spending 6 years as a high school maths teacher, before moving into primary education in Cape Town for 5 years. I have always been involved in coaching rugby, cricket and athletics and I was involved in boarding while teaching in Mosselbay for 4 years.
Why did you choose teaching as a career and what do you try to instil in your pupils?
My parents are both teachers, my brother is a teacher and most of my cousins are teachers and I followed their example. Put simply, I think I was born to teach! I want to invest in the future of our children and love to make learning fun them. In particular, I like to boost a child's confidence, spark creativity, and encourage good values
Apart from your classroom teaching role, what else do you get involved with at the school?
I coach rugby, cricket and athletics and take the Outdoor Adventure Club.
In your opinion, what makes Kennedy House special?
The school provides a safe and nurturing environment where kids can be kids and learn while enjoying nature in the shadow of Mount Meru and under the watchful eye of Kilimanjaro.
Who or what inspires you?
People, and some of the amazing things they are capable of.
Tell us something that not a lot of people know about you.
I once worked as a children’s activities co-ordinator on one of the biggest cruise ships in the world, sailing in the Caribbean and Mediterranean seas. While I was a student, I worked as a part time butcher!
