TEACHING STAFF
Mrs Salome Airdrie
PE Teacher & Swimming Coach
BSocSci Sport Psychology, PGCSE, South Africa
Briefly describe your career (teaching or otherwise) to date.
My journey in international teaching began in 2003 when I took the role of Head swim coach at a school in South Africa. A friend introduced me to the world of international teaching, and in 2007, I embarked on what was supposed to be a two-year stint in Oman. However, the allure of teaching abroad and the adventures that came with living in different countries led me to Brunei, where I met my husband. Eleven years ago, we moved to Hanoi, Vietnam, where I have thoroughly enjoyed my life and work as the Director of Sport and Activities.

Why did you choose teaching as a career and what do you try to instil in your pupils?
My journey from coaching hockey to teaching has been a fulfilling transition, where my passion for sports has enriched my educational approach. I cherish the opportunity to witness and contribute to the development of resilience and character in my students. It is my aspiration that each student leaves my classroom with a sense of accomplishment and pride in their achievements, carrying these values forward in their educational journey and beyond.

Apart from your classroom teaching role, what else do you get involved with at the school?
I am passionate about outdoor education and cherish the time spent with students and staff in nature.. It's in these new surroundings that I see relationships take shape and grow. This is where adventure meets learning, and where every day brings a new opportunity to explore and connect.with the school community.

Who or what inspires you?
I've always believed in the power of staying positive and what a huge difference it can make in the classroom. Being able to be that positive force for my students, to inspire and encourage them, is something I cherish deeply. It's all about lighting that spark of curiosity and resilience in them, showing them that learning is not just about textbooks, but about growing and chasing their dreams. For me, there's nothing more rewarding than seeing my students thrive and knowing I had a part in that.

Tell us something that not a lot of people know about you.
In my gap year after school I was a clown.
