Briefly describe your career (teaching or otherwise) before joining Kennedy House?

I have been a Primary School teacher for four years in a fairly large English primary school in Norfolk.  Before this, I spent some time working in Finance and at an Agricultural College, where, after years of trying to avoid the family tradition, I finally got sucked in by the magic of teaching.

Why did you choose teaching as a career and what do you try to instill in your pupils?

I love the challenge of being in the classroom and the satisfaction of watching children make progress. I’ve always been a ‘people person’ so it is great working with so many different children, staff and parents. I try and instill an appreciation and respect for others in my children as well as a love for learning through mistakes and a sense of grit-determination and independence.

Apart from your teaching role, what else do you get involved with at the school?

As well as teaching Year 6, I teach Design Technology to several year groups, dip my toes into Year 2 with ICT and help coach various sports.

In your opinion, what makes Kennedy House special?

The impeccable manners of the children at our school make it stand out as a very special place.  The opportunity to be so involved in developing ‘the whole child’ across the curriculum, and with the extra-curricular activities too, makes it a special place to work. You really get to see children develop and grow in so many different ways.

Who or what inspires you?

It’s rather dull, but I’ve been reading quite a few biographies by climbers from the 40s and 50s.  I always admire people who give things a go without knowing the outcome and come out of it with a story to tell.

Tell us something that not a lot of people know about you.

In my teenage years, I worked as a waiter for an outdoor catering company in Guernsey. At a government dinner, I managed to pour a whole jug of gravy down the back of a gentleman’s Tuxedo.  I got a job in a surf shop not long after that.
